pre-demo patch 0.1
Swing to Win » Devlog

- changed title from "King of the Web" to "Swing to win" reasoning being that i think this will add a bit more clarity as to what you're supposed to don in the game rather then trying to make it be known that the game is in a similar vein to games like jump king.
- made it so when you are crushed by the options menu and the quit game menu it doesn't restart the game, it did this because the demo end trigger crushes the player using the same object but i didn't manage the death correctly, that has now been fixed
there will probably not be any more bug fixes until the full demo is released, some things i will be working on for the full demo will be
- making the controls feel better, while the game is intended to be difficult i want it to be tricky in spite of the games controls not because of them, games like getting over it with bennet foddy and jump king have a large learning curve when mastering their controls i don't want that to be the case with king of the web because i feel un-intuitive controls can really turn people off.
- adding clarity to game mechanics and the things you do in the game, i want people to be able to know how the game is played right from the get go, the concept of the game i feel is simple enough for most people to grasp it pretty easily the issue I'm having is conveying that in a way that A) doesn't hold the players hand and B) doesn't leave the player confused as to how to play. another thing that i need to add clarity to is the actions that players do, the main one being if the player manages to hook the rope onto a platform they should know whether they can climb up it or if the rope was just out of reach but it is still dangling there.
- adding music and sound sound can help add clarity a sound effect for when the player has hooked a platform and climb the web as opposed to simply have just hooked it is one way i intend to add clarity, it can also add charm and character to the game, the sound of grass ruffling as you walk by or the sound of foot steps will add some more character to the game, music as well will make it feel less like you are playing in the open void of space.
- making the physics of the rope more consistent and less janky, as of right now the rope does work more or less as intended the problem is that it doesn't feel right, while game feel is subjective to a degree there is a science to it as well and as of right now there doesn't seem to be any consistent way to get the kind of launch that you want when you are releasing the web of the spider and i feel that is something i need to fix
- general bug fixes, there are some minor graphical issues that need to be fixed such as the leaves on the vines randomly jittering or the crushed bits of fallen blocks getting stuck in the geometry and acting strange, additionally there are more major bugs for example when the player is swinging and if they go too far around there can be issues or if they swing too close to the top of the rope there can be issues as well, parts of the tutorial text didn't load for some reason and anything else i manage to stumble across, there's probably some issues with the options menu that i haven't found yet.
i don't intend to build any more of the stage until after i have completed the complete demo build i also hope i don't have to do any other updates before the demo is released, this one just seemed necessary because the issue hampered major elements of the game and the fix was very easy to solve and not something i would have normally released with had i not set myself a deadline to release something by this Saturday.
